Blade Maintenance
There
are two kinds of blade covers, hard plastic or rubber guards and terry-cloth
"soakers". Plastic guards should be worn every time you step off the ic. Even
the rubber matted arenas accumulate dirt and grit from the shoes of by-standers
and this grit will nick and round off the fine edges of your blades much faster
than gliding across the ice. However, do NOT leave them on your skates between
sessions as they will trap water and cause your blades to rust. Also remember to
clean these plastic guards occasionally as they become a place for rust to
breed.
Cloth soakers should be put on after you have removed your skates and wiped them
dry with a soft cloth. They protect your blades from bumping, while in transit
and draw the moisture from condensation away from your blades to reduce chances
of rust occurring.
